do mediators have to be lawyers?
✅ Ask Us: "Do we need a lawyer as our workplace mediator?" sent in by Terry Day, HRBP, insurance company.

"Workplace mediators do not need to be lawyers. A mediator is a neutral third party who helps facilitate communication and resolution between or among disagreeing parties at work. While some mediators are lawyers, it is not a requirement for the role.
In fact, many mediators come from a variety of professional backgrounds, including human resources, psychology, social work, or conflict resolution.
The important qualities for a mediator are the ability to remain impartial, to facilitate effective communication, and to help parties come to a mutually acceptable resolution.
In very complex and technical businesses a subject matter expert might be helpful as the mediator, or in an advisory role to the mediation participants."
