This is best done within a specific sequence of topics that defines the issue at hand, reviews the common interests of the participants, and then explores options, both old and new, against a stated goal. The mediation ends with agreement about how to proceed.

WHO PARTICIPATES IN A MEDIATION?
Each mediation is different because participants have differing responsibilities towards others. Our mediations accommodate any number of people who meet face-to-face.
HRR has a preferred format that includes a lead person and a second participant from each party who meet jointly in a Common Room. Attorneys are welcome as well.
For mediations that involve larger numbers of people we utilize separate Caucus Rooms in addition to the Common Room.
WHERE DOES THE MEDIATION TAKE PLACE?
Cost considerations suggest that the best meeting room option is free space that can be secured in advance. Company, union, attorney, or public accommodations work very well. If these types of locations don't feel neutral, or are likely to be disruptive, then we suggest a hotel or professional meeting facility.”
