mediation via teleconference

Ask Us: “Are teleconferencing mediations effective?” sent in by Cameron Fortis, auto dealership, Illinois.

Mediation, like most aspects of business today, is seeing video conferences growing in use. The key reason initially was pandemic driven. Outlasting the woes of the pandemic are lower costs, reduced time commitments, and improved tech - big drivers in attracting interest in workplace resolutions via teleconference.

Effectiveness? Some people are more comfortable with video calls than others. I certainly wouldn’t dismiss face-to-face, although I tend to prefer meeting in person for any highly contentious issues - as it is a more socially conducive atmosphere. But I am at ease with video, particularly for the quicker mediations.

It is a matter of personal style, and not up to the mediator. It is up to you to find the format that suits.
